Disability Support Services | Student Rights & Responsibilities
Student Rights
You have the right to reasonable accommodations if you meet the basic requirements to perform the activities of the program. Institutions of higher education are not required to alter their requirements for either admission or graduation.
You have the right to confidentiality. Information regarding a student's disability will not be released without a student’s permission.
You have the right to appeal any decision made regarding academic accommodations.
Student Responsibilities
To ensure that needed accommodations are provided, it is the student’s responsibility to:
- Contact the Disability Support Services (DSS) office as early as possible so individual needs can be determined and accommodations can be provided in a timely manner.
- Provide timely notice and documentation of the nature of the disability and the accommodations requested to the DSS office. Some accommodations may require time to arrange. Requests for accommodations should be received by the DSS office at least one month, when possible, prior to the beginning of the quarter for which the request is made. Lack of advance notice may delay the availability of an accommodation.
- Provide such additional documentation on the nature and extent of the disability as the DSS office may require to determine appropriate accommodations. Such documentation may include, but is not limited to: identification of tests administered, test results, a description of the covered disability and recommended accommodations.
- Cooperate with the DSS office staff to develop an appropriate and reasonable accommodation.
- Schedule an appointment to meet with DSS staff if there are questions or concerns related to accommodations.
- Present the Letter of Accommodation each quarter to the instructor(s) on the first day of class or as soon as possible to discuss accommodations with the instructor(s).
- Arrive on time for meetings with tutors or interpreters and notify tutors or interpreters if you will be late or absent for meetings or class.
- Coordinate arrangements for tutoring through the DSS office.
- Notify the DSS office regarding changes to class schedule after initial accommodations have been determined.
To request this information in an alternate format, contact the DSS office.
