Experiences at Camp Antioch 2008

Back to Camp Antioch

"Wow! What an amazing experience! 'Feeding the mind, body and spirit' was the perfect description of the weekend. Having lived on Vashon, it has always reminded me of Brigadoon, a place slightly disconnected from reality. And that's a good thing.  It's a place where we can throw away the rules and restrictions of our daily lives and be who we really are. I always try to approach events with no pre-conceived expectations, but Camp Antioch helped revive that enthusiasm for learning and growing that made my days at the Seattle campus so special. What I found valuable is that I learned a lot of things that I can take back to my working life at St. Francis skilled nursing facility. I didn't expect that. I also made a lot of personal connections that will be valuable resources in my work caring for patients and their families in health crises and facing end-of life decisions."
Christopher Key, B.A. Liberal Studies, 1994

"Camp Antioch helped me put my life in perspective."
Nkechi Ndu, Student, Antioch Los Angeles

"For me, this retreat was an opportunity to interact with people who care about the world, and who care about Antioch. Our shared values brought us together as strangers but made us friends in just a few days. It was powerful to hear the stories of how Antioch grads are using their education in such wonderful ways to transform their own lives and the people around them. This was truly a weekend for rejuvenation, learning and joy. I valued the time to reflect on my life in interesting, new ways. Self reflection is vital to our continued growth, and I learned that I could grow through creative outlets like drum circles and collage, just as much as traditional lectures and writing opportunities stimulate growth."
Michelle Wilkinson, Staff, Antioch University Seattle

"For me, this retreat is a time for me to go back to my childhood when I went to camp every summer ... a time for me to check out of daily life, be with others that share the same values/education that I do, learn things that I never thought I would have the opportunity to learn. Camp Antioch is a pathway to illuminating my blind spot — shining more light on those things that I didn't know that I didn't know. Many of the workshops were surprisingly important to me — just what I needed and didn't know that I needed. I love that about Camp Antioch. I don't have the opportunity to find that anywhere else.

"What I have found valuable was signing up for Camp and then letting go of control — what should happen, what I should get out of it, what people should be there. Whatever happens at Camp Antioch is exactly the right thing. I learned to let go and I learned that I can do that in other areas of my life as well."
Swanee Yourkowski, M.S. Management, 2006

"A powerful/meaningful/magical weekend."
Joan Major, M.A. Whole Systems Design, 1986

"I enjoyed Camp Antioch as a delightful mix of fun and learning with new friends and professional colleagues. Coming from different programs, different years, and even different states, our camaraderie grew quickly. The retreat weekend was a place to relax, express, and stretch more into my own becoming."
Mary Tolena, M.S. Management, 1994

"Camp Antioch was the best therapy! There was a plethora of exciting, thought-provoking, stimulating, and invigorating activities/workshops throughout the weekend. From the beautiful and serene setting of Camp Burton on Vashon Island, to the healthy and delicious food, to the accommodations (brand new retreat living quarters), to the evening campfires, to meeting and conversing with other Antiochians from various campuses, and to all the workshops, made for a delightful and very rewarding experience!"
Sherill Zemek, M.A. Organizational Psychology, 2005
