Deepen Your Practice with a Master’s Degree
Antioch’s MAT Program focuses on social justice, antiracism, and critical reflection through mentorship in the field and small, collaborative courses. Our students develop the skills, deep understanding, and vision to make an impact in their schools and communities. Earn your state of Washington K-8 Teaching Certificate and master’s degree in 12 months, with the option to add a Washington English Language Learner (ELL) Endorsement with only two additional courses. Courses for the master’s degree culminate in a student-driven Capstone project on a topic they are passionate about.

Program Overview
From the elementary classroom to the university, we believe that education can lead to social transformation. Antioch’s MAT Program is designed to deepen candidates’ understanding, sharpen their skills, grow their vision, and develop their leadership potential. A hallmark of our program is real-world experiences and mentoring designed with each candidate in mind. From fall through spring, candidates work alongside experienced mentor teachers in public school classrooms. Our candidates graduate ready to teach in transformative ways that challenge the status quo. Highlights of the program include:
- Instructors who are experienced educators and experts in their fields
- Small, synchronous online classes
- A focus on relationships and community among students
- Evening classes that allow candidates to work part-time
- Experienced mentor teachers who guide candidates’ learning in the classroom
- One-to-one mentoring in the classroom from university coaches
- Course assignments that connect new learning to real-world practice
- Advisors who will support you every step of the way
- Part-time and full-time enrollment options
Building on the foundation of our 35-credit Teacher Education Program, the MAT program offers three courses that introduce students to educational research in Humanities and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics). These courses help students to deepen their knowledge of the field and improve their teaching practice. In the final course, students are introduced to methods of teacher research, which focuses on gathering and analyzing data to deepen understanding and improve practice.

Additional Information
Antioch Seattle’s TEP offers flexibility so candidates can customize their plan for the career goals and pacing that work for them. Candidates can complete requirements for a Washington Teaching Certificate in Elementary (K-8) Education in as little as 12 months (beginning in July and ending in June), or they can enroll in an extended plan of study part-time and complete the program in two years. Candidates may enroll in the optional ELL Endorsement courses concurrently or after they complete the requirements for their K-8 Teaching Certificate.
To be recommended for a State of Washington Teaching Certificate (K-8), candidates complete 35 quarter credits, which include a combination of coursework and fieldwork. As part of our commitment to equity in education, our program includes a focus on centering the brilliance of students of color and multilingual students. Candidates who wish to further their knowledge and skills for supporting multilingual students may complete the requirements for a state of Washington ELL Endorsement with only two additional courses.

Admissions
How to Apply
Our new program model is more flexible, affordable, and manageable for working professionals. Because we are still getting the word out about these exciting changes, we have extended the application deadline for Summer 2024 to June 1. We have a rolling admissions process, so applicants are encouraged to apply early to allow time to schedule interviews. Orientation is July 8, and classes start Jul 9, 2024.
