Ward has taught at Central Michigan University, Oakland University (MI) and Winona State University, where he also founded and coordinated the Counselor Training Institute, which sought to meet the advanced training needs of regional counseling and mental health professionals. Ward specializes in counseling techniques and has taught numerous courses in different kinds of counseling.
