Can you describe what a drama therapist does?
Drama therapy can take many forms depending on individual, family and group needs, interests and therapeutic goals. Drama therapists use improvisation, theater games, storytelling, enactment and performances to help participants to achieve emotional and physical integration and personal as well as relational growth.
Can I become a licensed therapist or counselor?
The Antioch program prepares you as a clinical practitioner who can become licensed by the state and registered with the National Association of Drama Therapy (NADT).
Where do drama therapists work?
Drama therapists work in numerous settings including, but not limited to, hospitals, residential treatment programs, schools, shelters, community centers, prisons and private practice.

What do I need for admission to the Drama Therapy with M.A. in Psychology concentration?
- A strong interest in the integration of theater and therapy.
- A background in drama/theater.
- A minimum of three undergraduate psychology courses: Theories of Personality, Developmental Psychology and Abnormal Psychology.
- Volunteer or paid work experience in human services strongly recommended.
Application to drama therapy also requires transcripts, autobiographical statement, goal statement, two letters of recommendation and an outline indicating applicant's background in theater, human services work and/or any creative arts therapy experiences.
Why does drama therapy have a dual concentration?
Drama therapy at Antioch follows the guidelines set forth by the National Association for Drama Therapy (NADT) and meets the academic requirements for Registry as a Drama Therapist (RDT). The concentration also meets the academic requirements for Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) licensure and Mental Health Counseling (MHC) licensure. Graduates receive an M.A. in Psychology with a dual concentration either in drama therapy with MFT or drama therapy with MHC.
Where would I be placed for my internship?
Drama therapy internship placements include mental health facilities, schools, hospitals, shelters, community centers, group homes and after-school programs.
Is this an accredited program?
Yes. Antioch University Seattle is accredited through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
When did Antioch begin offering psychology degrees?
Antioch has offered an M.A. in Psychology since 1975. The master's program has grown to include multiple applied and clinical psychology fields, including a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology, Art Therapy, Mental Health Counseling and Couple and Family Therapy.
