Teachers have an immediate, direct and positive impact on the common good. If this is your motivation to become a teacher, you will find that Antioch's M.A. in Education with Teacher Preparation program will help you discover how education can be a powerful vehicle for social change.

The faculty and practice-based curriculum emphasize collaboration, cultural pluralism, social justice and educational change.

You join a cohort of 20 to 25 students eager to meet the challenges and complexities of teaching in schools with diverse student populations. Your fellow students come from a variety of backgrounds including health, social services, business, childcare, engineering, homemaking, the arts and computer sciences.

Students focus on action research models, social change and curriculum design and analysis. The master's program culminates in an inquiry project and students present their research findings in a presentation symposium.

Schedule and Time to Completion

Full-time students typically complete the program in six quarters. Classes meet Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 9:30 p.m.

Competency-based Learning

Graduates meet all of the Washington state requirements to teach at the Elementary (K-8) or Secondary (5-12) math or science level with options for additional specializations within elementary education. You will learn to:

  • Plan and implement curriculum that meets the needs of diverse students
  • Teach in diverse classroom settings
  • Manage the material and human dynamics of the classroom
  • Nurture the holistic development of all students
  • Work with existing technology in the classroom
  • Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, parents and community members
  • Assume leadership roles to advocate for children

Residency Certification Options

At Antioch, you have a choice of the following options when becoming eligible for certification as a teacher in Washington state:

  • Elementary Education (K-8) requiring 72 credits of coursework
    • Optional Washington state elementary endorsements include Middle School Math, Science or Humanities
  • Secondary (5-12) Math requiring 60 credits of coursework
  • Secondary (5-12) Science requiring 60 credits of coursework

Antioch Teaching Approach

Some of the features that make AUS unique from other education programs include small classes, a robust cohort model, Action Research Project learning and Learning Assessments (also called Narrative Evaluations) instead of grades.

Small Classes
At AUS, you'll find small, intimate classes where each student has a chance to interact with the faculty and their peers. Classes center on discussion and problem solving.

  • A typical class consists of 10-20 candidates
  • High levels of interaction with faculty and peers are encouraged, creating dialog that leads to a fuller learning experience
  • The Antioch approach is exactly the student-centered teaching you will take with you into your own classroom

Capstone Project
Master's students complete an Capstone Project as an alternative to a traditional thesis. The Action Research process emphasizes drawing from your own experience and interests when developing research, action, and evaluation to improve the quality of education. A cornerstone of Action Research is its goal to involve the participants in change-oriented action.

The result provides you the opportunity to integrate theory and practice as you become both a teacher and an educational leader in the classroom.

Learning Assessments
Learning Assessments for courses and learning activities are written by faculty at the end of each academic quarter. The use of learning assessments enables our faculty to provide you with more meaningful, individualized and comprehensive feedback on your progress. The focus is on your accomplishments, strengths and weaknesses, rather than on the external validation of a letter grade.

Your official transcript with learning evaluations is recognized and respected within the academic community. If for scholarship, reimbursement or further education purposes you require a letter grade you can request one on a class by class basis directly from your professor.
