Sylvia Brown
B.A. (with teacher preparation), 2006
M.A. Education, 2007
Sylvia Brown had two associate degrees when she entered Antioch's B.A. with Teacher Preparation program.
"The credits did help," she says. "I did not have to go through a complete four-year program to accomplish what I set out to do."
"I'm gainfully employed in the position I waited my whole life for [because of my education at Antioch]."
She had been tutoring math and reading in an elementary school when she first heard about Antioch's Center for Programs in Education.
"Antioch was a recommendation from the principal and reading coach I was working with," she says.
Now that she has completed both her B.A. with teacher preparation and M.A. in Education at Antioch, Brown is a Title 1 math teacher at Gray Middle School in Tacoma. She is succinct when she describes the value of her Antioch education.
"I'm gainfully employed in the position I waited my whole life for," she says.
She credits – and thanks – several faculty members for their inspiration.
"Antrue Phillips, was such a knowledgeable instructor and so straightforward that I actually learned to appreciate science, a subject that has never been a favorite of mine. Now I can get in front of a class and enjoy sharing what I know with the students.
"Wanda West recognized my math strengths and constantly encouraged me when I felt I wanted to give up my dream of being a math teacher. Robert Delisle, was always encouraging me when I felt weak during my independent studies.
"Wendy Rosen, wow, what a powerful and sensitive woman. She recognized something in me that I was not sure was there – that was my writing ability. A great big thank you to all of them," says Brown.
When she recommends Antioch to prospective students, she talks about how classes are planned to accommodate working adults.
"If they are working, the classes would fit well with their schedule because they are all in the evening and on Saturdays. They do not conflict with your regular schedule too much," she notes.
