Theatre is a core arts subject in Washington state because it engages students in imaginative explorations of learning. With a Theatre Arts Endorsement, you:

  • Employ one of the oldest forms of human expression and meaning to enliven your classrooms, schools and communities.
  • Help students develop personal voice and deepen their sense of empathy.
  • Structure and participate in group experiences with a rich understanding of personal responsibility and accountability to the group.
  • Expand your capacities to generate effective performance opportunities for the learner.

Antioch's Theatre Arts Endorsement program gives both the classroom teacher without theatre experience and the experienced theatre professional/teacher an opportunity to expand their skills and aptitudes and receive a competency-based Theatre Arts Endorsement. To learn more about Theatre Arts Endorsement requirements, go to www.k12.wa.us/certification/profed/competency.aspx and click on Theatre Arts.

The U.S. Bancorp Foundation gave a $5,000 grant to help Antioch University bring theatre arts into today's K-12 classrooms. This grant benefits the School of Education's Theatre Arts Endorsement Program, which was created in response to the OSPI mandate that requires all schools in Washington to teach and assess all students in the arts. As part of their coursework, endorsement candidates can stage a theatrical production at the schools in which they teach. With this grant, Antioch will offer $500 mini-grants to endorsement candidates to defray the costs of a production — props, costumes, equipment and materials for teaching drama or resources such as books or media for the teacher's school.
