If you are committed to leading sustainable change in the classroom and in your community, the Environmental & Sustainability Endorsement (ESE) will support your goals.
The ESE endorsement was approved by the
Professional Educators Standards Board (PESB)
in 2009 and consists of of three main categories (Content, Instructional Methodology, and Professional Competencies) containing 32 competencies. The Antioch ESE endorsement broadly covers ecological
science and all the social dimensions of
sustainability and meets the requirements of Washington state.
Sustainability refers to the study
of human relationships to the natural world that
effect quality of life for all species, both now and
into the future. You will weave learning in ecological science with examining how cultural, political, and economic
activity over time has influenced human regard for
the natural world and shaped our treatment of the
environment.
The typical program option is to complete 20 credits over five quarters of part-time instruction. The final course is a field-experience based capstone project.
Experienced teachers can focus more on completing the qualifying portfolio of required competencies. Rather than taking all the prescribed coursework, candidates may successfully document with portfolio entries competencies achieved through their prior related coursework and professional training as well as through representative evidence of their classroom practice and students' learning.
Above all, you have the flexibility to create personally meaningful and relevant paths of learning toward the endorsement, with emphasis on local communities and integration of traditional and indigenous knowledge and concern for the ethics of eco-justice.
