Position Summary

The School of Education offers K-8 teacher certification at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as a graduate degree for those teachers presently holding certification. Our core faculty teach courses in Elementary/Middle School Science or Environmental Education.

Nature and Scope

School of Education programs draw on the current research and study the implication of that research for learning. All offerings in the School promote constructivist pedagogy, critical reflection about the practice in our increasingly multicultural world, critical reflection about the social and political beliefs that influence institutions and commitment to social justice through transformative education. They emphasize close integration of theory and practice and reflect Antioch's commitment to social justice, whole-person learning and leadership for responsible educational change.

Essential Functions/Accountabilities
  1. Curriculum development
  2. Individualized advising
  3. Undergraduate and graduate teaching
  4. Independent study supervision
  5. Teamwork with faculty and staff
  6. Participation in overall program development and maintenance
  7. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, participating in student admissions, faculty meetings and program development and assessment.
  8. Faculty members are also expected to be active in campus, scholarly, professional and community activities.
Qualifications
  1. Ph.D., A.B.D. or Ed.D. required.
  2. Elementary/Middle or Junior High School teaching experience.
  3. Minimum 3 to 5 years successful undergraduate or graduate-level teaching experience, preferably with adult students.
  4. Demonstrated scholarship and professional competence in relevant field.
  5. Experience with and demonstrated ability to work successfully in diverse/multicultural settings.
  6. Collaborative interpersonal style with demonstrated communication and problem-solving skills in working with colleagues and adult learners.
  7. Educational philosophy congruent with that of Antioch University Seattle.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of a foreign language, in addition to English, that represents the linguistic diversity of the area school populations.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to working for social justice and equality in K-12 education.
  3. Experience as a science consultation in K-12 public schools.
  4. Special consideration will be given to people who bring additional expertise in leadership and change, human development or technology. 
Supervision

Serve as liaison to other science methods teachers.

Physical and Mental Demands

This position may interact with various sources of information and with persons involved with sensitive or confidential issues. The performance of the administrative support and duties requires a high degree of accuracy. This position frequently must prioritize tasks with little supervision.
