Position Summary

Provides leadership, development and direction for Antioch University Seattle's advancement units. These units implement the goals, policies and procedures to support institutional fund raising and development, public affairs, media relations, publications, alumni relations and business/corporate, community and government relations.


Essential Functions/Accountabilities
  1. Oversees the operation of the campus advancement operations. Advancement involves development (fundraising), public affairs and media relations, publications, alumni relations, continuing education and business/corporate community and government relations of the University. Prepares a comprehensive long-range (three to five years) plan of action for various functional areas of advancement and recommends to the President specific short-term plans of action with defined goals, procedures, staffing, budget and timetables which is based on and is supportive of the comprehensive long-range plan of the University. Reports regularly to the President and at the request of the President on the status of the functional areas within University Relations.
  2. In collaboration with the President, monitors and updates the strategic plan for development, fundraising and board development in order to support the goals of the University. This plan focuses on strategies for annual giving, planned giving and capital campaigns, other gifts or bequests and includes activities for donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and recognition. Assures development records are maintained to ensure accurate accounting, processing and that gift acknowledgments are provided, as appropriate. Prepares the President for the solicitation of major donors, when appropriate.
  3. Oversees the University's public relations and public affairs activities. With the Director of Integrated Marketing, assures the development of communication programs that present a positive image of the university to key constituencies as well as the general public. Serves as the official spokesperson for Antioch University, advising the President on public relations issues.
  4. Develops and implements a program of alumni relations, including creation of an active two-way communication system with alumni in order to facilitate and build long-term alumni involvement and support.
  5. Oversees the Continuing Education activities that provide lifelong learning and professional development opportunities, including a variety of non-credit courses and certificate programs.
  6. Maintains a relationship and communication network with the advisory boards and other volunteer groups in the University Relations arena; major prospects and donors, family foundations, other community/civic leaders and organizations to support and promote the goals of the University.
  7. Recommends to the President an annual budget for the University Advancement area based on the programmatic based budgets prepared by the Directors in their respective functional areas.
  8. Serves and interacts with the President, Deans, administrators, faculty and University committees to support and promote the goals of the University.
  9. Interacts with other Antioch University entities as assigned.
  10. Participates as a key member of the AUS campus-wide governance structure, including the President's Team, as directed by the President.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned in support of the Antioch University mission.

Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required. Master's degree or doctorate preferred.
  2. Minimum 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in fundraising and public relations within higher education or non-profit environment.

  1. Ability to build a sustainable fundraising unit that increases the campus annual fund drive, scholarship endowment and major donor activities.
  2. Ability to build sustainable integrated marketing and continuing education units that will assist the University in meeting its strategic goals in these areas.
  3. Ability to understand fundraising and marketing trends within higher education and ability to adapt programs and goals to address current and future economic, public relations and development situations.
  4. Ability to recognize opportunities for fundraising, marketing and public relations of new academic and continuing education programs.
  5. Align with the values of the educational philosophy of Antioch University.
  6. Experience in strategic planning, program planning, supervision and financial management and a commitment to and achievement in campus diversity.
  7. Ability to lead, coach, train and motivate members of an advancement team.
  8. Well-developed collaborative, organizational, management and interpersonal skills.
  9. Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, campus community and community-at-large with a strong commitment to service orientation and promotion of goals and values consistent with the mission of Antioch University.
  10. Ability to work in a participatory, community environment with a diverse workforce.

 

Relationships

Internal: Works closely with local faculty, administrators, staff, students and all University functions. Works with the Vice-Chancellor for University Advancement from Antioch University in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

External: Works closely with local, state and federal agencies on an ongoing basis. Additionally, represents the University by serving on and participating in University committee/task force groups and community and professional organizations. Participates in various professional, educational and civic organizations to promote good community relationships and to keep abreast of new developments and laws affecting academic/University issues.


Supervision

Supervises a staff of exempt and non-exempt individuals. Position reports directly to the President of Antioch University Seattle. Functions with no direct supervision and requires a high degree of independent judgment and discretion.


Environmental and Job Hazards
No unusual environmental or job hazards.

Physical and Mental Demands

The office management portion of this position is essentially a sedentary job. The functions are usually performed sitting but may involve some amount of time standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting (max. of 25 lbs.), walking, carrying and other movements.

Periods of high stress given the nature and level of the work.
